Upon graduation, I joined the Air Force but was placed on delayed enlistment for a few months. While on delayed enlistment, I worked for Char-Gale, a heating and air conditioning duct company in Union City. After a while, I went to work for Reelfoot Meatpacking in Union City. Finally, in October of 1974, I went to Air Force basic training at Lackland AFB, Texas, where I began a 24 year career in the USAF. After basic training, I was sent to technical school at Keesler AFB, MS. After eight months of electronics training at Keesler, I became a Ground Radio Equipment repairman for the Air Force. At some point in my career, the AF decided they needed me to be a Tactical Air Command and Control Specialist (TACCS) more than they needed me to repair radios, so they involuntarily reclassified me as a TACCS. So now, instead of fixing radios, I'm talking on them to direct Air Force fighter aircraft on where to drop bombs for the U.S. Army...not exactly the type of AF career I had in mind, but I stuck it out anyway for 24 years - mainly because the AF wouldn't let me out of the job and I had kind of gotten used to the paychecks. When I graduated the electronics school at Keesler AFB, MS, I was sent to Shaw AFB in Sumter, SC (1975-1981); then, I spent a year at Camp Red Cloud in Korea (1981-1982); after Korea, my next assignment was Ft Carson in Colorado Springs, Colorado (1982-1984) (you guessed it - with the Army again!) Colorado Springs was one of the most beautiful places that I've ever been but the day I stepped off the plane, it was 35 below zero!; Just as I was starting to really love Colorado, the AF shipped me off to Butzbach, Germany (1984-1988). I was upset at first about having to leave Colorado, but I soon learned to love Germany even more. The food, beer, and travel around Europe were unbelievable! I actually drove my car from Germany to Paris, France one weekend! I liked Germany so much that I stayed two years longer than I had to; Finally, after four years in Germany, I was sent to Ft Lewis, WA near Tacoma and Seattle where I've been since 1988. I love it here too. So much so that this is my last stop. I met my beautiful wife, Brenda here and we have a lovely home and wonderful children. I retired from the Air Force in 1998, went to work for the Washington State Department of Licensing for a couple of years and I've been a Letter Carrier for the U.S. Post Office for almost eighteen years and I retired from the post office in October of 2017.
